James is a historian by training but has worked to promote and preserve the archaeology and heritage of Northern Ireland for over thirty years. Working with the Historic Environment Division since 1992, James has experience with archaeological planning, development control and the Sites and Monuments Record, but he specialised in all aspects of conflict archaeology, including defence heritage and battlefield survey. From 2008-2016 James studied war in Sixteenth-century Ireland at Queens University Belfast and University College Cork, resulting in a PhD, a well-received monograph and numerous publications in journals and magazines. He has been a member of the HMC since 2019.
